Jay, a BA Business and Management student, looks back on his placement year:
“On my placement, I spent a year working for ‘Mitsubishi Motors in the UK’ as a Sales Analyst & Planner. I really enjoyed my year as it allowed me to gain freedom from the normal academic structure and produce work towards a collaborative goal. I appreciated the level of responsibility I was given in my role, as I believe that the confidence the company put in me encouraged me to develop my own ability further and gain a new level of satisfaction in my own work.
This experience has also enhanced many of the skills that we practice in lectures, due to the significance of the tasks being that much greater. For example, presenting work back to senior managers has further boosted my confidence in public speaking. Moreover, the high frequency of meetings has meant my ability to work in a group, as well as lead a team has grown. I believe my placement will stand me in good stead for my future graduate career. This year has opened a host of new experiences which I can demonstrate to employers in future job interviews. Furthermore, I believe that this year has also allowed me to identify the job roles which will best suit me. Although I entered this year specifically looking for a marketing placement, having spent time immersed in my company’s work environment I have found that a broader background is important to any job role. The ability to understand how my decisions effect other parts of the business is crucial.
