You can meet one of our Careers Consultants for a one-to-one career coaching appointment – whether it’s face-to-face, over the phone or via Skype. We have seven full time Careers Consultants and four associates to help in the autumn term. This isn’t like a career session you had at school – see the FAQs below about what exactly a careers appointment is.
What can I be coached on?
Essentially you can be coached on any career related topic where you are currently having difficulties, and would appreciate the opportunity to get a different perspective. People tend to bring a whole range of issues into coaching sessions such as; having no idea at all where to start or being unsure about next step or path. Or maybe you want to build confidence in a particular area and get help with decision making. CV checks, finding work experience, placements and graduate roles, mock interviews and guidance through the recruitment process are also common themes. You could even come and talk about your strategy for getting through assessment centres and presentations. Essentially any topic which will help you grow in your career.
How should I prepare?
Give some thought to what you’d like to achieve, what’s going to help you get there and what might stop you from getting there. Within that, what would you like to talk about in the session.
What should I expect?
It’s a private and confidential conversation between you and your Career Consultant which takes place face to face, over Skype or telephone. The conversation will be unique to you and whatever you want to talk about. Expect to be listened to and questioned – you’re likely to do most of the talking; expect not to be judged; expect to be challenged to think in new ways and to be helped to identify your next steps. Ideally by the end of the session you’ll have some actions you can go and work on to get you to the next stage.
How do I book a coaching session?
Log on to My Jobs Online and select a time convenient to you. You should have a couple of Careers Consultants to select from.
What happens afterwards?
It’s up to you. Subject to availability there is no limit to the number of times you can see a Careers Consultant, although we would encourage you to take some time between appointments to be able to act on what you talk about. We would also ask you to bear in mind that other students are also looking for appointments, so you won’t be able to book multiple appointments in a single week.
