Virtual Internships and Online Courses

There are lots of free online courses and virtual internships available at the moment. They can be really beneficial for you to develop your knowledge and experience, and it can give you something extra to put on your CV or talk about in a job application. If you have time to complete one (or more!) then we highly recommend you give it a go.

Here’s a round-up of ones we’ve seen that look great.

Career Smart

We had to start with this one! Co-created and run by our team and the University of Reading’s Careers team, it’s open to all University of Reading students this online course started on 8 June, but it’s not too late to join. Find out more about the UK graduate recruitment cycle and get ahead of your peers.

  • Find out what skills recruiters are looking for
  • Discover the best way to find graduate jobs and research companies
  • Think through your knowledge, skills and experience for job applications
  • Learn the foundations of writing a good CV and preparing for interviews

Who’s it for?

University of Reading students who are:

  • Entering their final year in September 2020
  • Starting a Masters with us this year
  • In their final year
  • Currently completing a Masters

Important dates

Career Consultants will be active on the course from 8 June to 30 August 2020. We expect you to complete 2 – 3 hours a week for 4 weeks, but you can take the course at a pace that suits you.

Bright Network’s Internship Experience UK

Internship Experience UK is a 3 day online programme designed to offer experience to every student. All the content will be delivered by leading employers and industry experts, whilst also giving participants the chance to work on a project which simulates real-life graduate work.

Who’s it for?

Current students and graduates over 18 years old. Prior to the course there will be a light pre-screening stage to ensure you are committed to the programme. This will consist of basic data capture and a short 100 word answer on why you want to take part.

Important Dates

  • 29 June – 1 July = Investment Banking
  • 30 June – 2 July = Technology
  • 6 July – 8 July = Business, Operations and Marketing
  • 7 July – 9 July = Finance and Professional Services
  • 13 July – 15 July = Consulting


Virtual work experience programmes mimic entry-level work done at InsideSherpa’s partners. Once enrolled, you’ll be given a hypothetical set of tasks that an employer would expect you to complete on a given work day.

Completing programmes give you real skills professionals use daily and connects you to the firms themselves.

There are no key dates. The programme is self-paced and it takes 5-6 hours to complete 1 programme.

LinkedIn Learning

Normally you would have to pay for LinkedIn Learning, but the University of Reading has a license so you don’t need to! You will need to register with your university email account to use it.

There are over 16,000 courses based around business, creativity and technology. It’s hard to know where to start listing what’s on offer, because there is so much! From learning to use different software, to finding out more about accountancy, from photography to web design and from cloud computing to career development. Take your pick!
